Ininímotán at St John’s Library on Mondays

Have you ever wanted a place to learn Ininew (swampy cree, n-dialect)? As someone from Shamattawa First Nation, I have always wanted to learn but never had the opportunity. I am now going to be hanging out in the library on Mondays for July and August to see if there is interest in speaking swampy cree in a safe and judgment free environment. I am not a language speaker myself, but I have some familiarity with it, and have a book that has modules and an audio resource we can listen to together. My hope is that I will share what I know, others will share what they know and we can celebrate this Indigenous language by using it more in our day to day lives and build a community of learners and speakers to do it together.

I am volunteering on Mondays for the next couple months and the library is sharing their space (thank you). It is a wheelchair accessible space and there are adult and children’s Indigenous language resources we can explore at the library as well.

I have also created this page on my website where I am going to be sharing resources and handouts for people to download and share throughout the summer, click on the button below:
