17 Things you can do to make a difference
The world can be a lot to take in on a good day. With recent challenges happening around the world and in our own community, many of us wonder what we can do to make a difference. When I was younger, I felt especially helpless to make a positive change since there was so much negativity, cruelty and violence out there. With so many hard to overcome situations and me just being one person, it made me feel overwhelmed and uncertain on what to do. Sometimes it still does.
But what I did then, is the same thing I am doing now and it’s the same thing I recommend you do too; if you feel the world has too much bad, then take some action today to create a little bit of good. No matter how small it may seem, if all of us work together to care for ourselves and those around us, I believe we can overcome impossible situations. I believe we can impact entire systems and replace harmful ones with new solutions based on love, equity and justice.
Kindness Over Cruelty
In a cruel world, being kind is a radical act. The following list of radical actions come from the graphic novel about my life, Little By Little: You Can Change The World (written by Sonya Ballantyne, illustrated by Rhael McGregor, lettered by Toben Racicot & published by HighWater Press). And although this graphic novel is intended for grades 4, 5 & 6, I believe the messages within it, and especially this list of actions, can be useful for helpers of all ages. We are not helpless in the face of injustice, our example can be our message. Let's all take many small actions today because they will add up tomorrow. I promise to do my part if you will too; use your example to encourage those around you to do their part too and little by little, we will change the world.
