100 Years of Main Street Walking Tour

On Saturday May 3, as part of Jane’s Walk Winnipeg, with the support of the Winnipeg Arts Council and North End History, this special walking tour took place in Winnipeg’s North End. 100 Years of Main Street: Commerce and Community, hosted by Michael Redhead Champagne, provided attendees with an opportunity to explore the businesses and built architecture of Main Street in Winnipeg’s North End from Cathedral to Matheson Street. This 1 hour tour will highlight the businesses and let you go inside some of them but there will not be much time for purchases during the tour.

Notable stops include:

  • Shelly’s Indigenous Bistro - 1364 Main Street

  • Pollock’s Hardware Co-Op - 1407 Main Street

  • Ogniwo Polish Museum - 1417 Main Street

  • Modern Coffee - 191 Inkster Blvd.

  • Mantic Metaphysical - 1469 Main Street

  • Tenderloin Meat & Sausage - 1515 Main Street

  • Black Olive Pizza and Chicken (formerly Salisbury House) - 1545 Main Street

Along the way, we point out the architecture of buildings and houses that were built around the late 1800s and early 1900s as Winnipeg formed into its southern wealthier neighbourhoods, and northern working class neighbourhoods. The cultural identities and economic conditions faced by the people who built and continue to build these businesses are also highlighted.

If requested, a version of this tour could take place over a longer period of time to allow for attendees to take more time inside of the stores and make purchases. Food and beverages from these stores can also be arranged along the route.
